Could a tropical storm impact the weather Sunday for the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon? It s a possibility, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, but it may not be as bad as it sounds. Early forecasts show Sunday s temperature looks to be warmer than average, Jeanes said, with a high of 63 degrees when the race begins around 7 a.

m. We may jump into the 70s just a few hours later, Jeanes said, with temperatures between 68 and 72 degrees by 10 a.m. By 1 p.m., temperatures could reach the low-to-mid 70s, with highs potentially climbing into the upper 70s for some. Probably warmer than most runners prefer. But that could change, Jeanes said, depending on a cluster of thunderstorms currently developing in the Gulf of Mexico. The cluster could become a named tropical storm, Jeanes said, with its remnants, including rain, expected to drift north late Friday night through Sunday. Some forecast models show the rain staying farther to the east, Jeanes said. But it might not be all that bad if the system tracks closer to Chicago. Even if it stays east, if it s close enough to us, you get the wind off the lake, Jeanes said. That could at least lower the temperature. While we don t want rain, you kind of want this to at least be near Chicago to provide that easterly wind to drop the temperature if you re a runner. In 2007, temperatures on race day topped out at 87 degrees, Jeanes said. Nearly 20 years earlier, in 1988, temperatures for the Chicago Marathon were much colder, at 21 degrees.
