Bakersfield Tracker
Every road closure, water issue, outage, construction notice and transit alert the city's agencies, utilities and newsrooms reported across Bakersfield and the close-in metro, counted week by week. No login, no feed. Just the numbers, and where they landed.
What the numbers say
A steady week on the roads, with SR-99 coming up most.
Half of Bakersfield's road incidents clear within 1.5 hours. The longest ran 26 hours.
Measured from 369 with a start and end time, the last 3 weeks.
Half of Bakersfield's outages clear within 4.6 hours. The longest ran 24 hours.
Measured from 146 with a start and end time, the last 3 weeks.
Half of Bakersfield's construction notices clear within 6.3 hours. The longest ran 33 hours.
Measured from 109 with a start and end time, the last 3 weeks.
Week by week
Outages fell from 82 to 39 last week. Road, water, construction and transit have held steady.
In the week of Oct 18, outages ran more than twice a normal week. Thursday Oct 22 was the worst of it, with about 4,400 customers out at once around 1:39 AM, across 8 ZIPs. A flash flood warning was out that morning, from 6:12 AM to 9:15 AM.
Measured from 82 counted outages, and 4,419 out together at the worst moment of Thursday.
Weeks start on Sunday. One thing is counted once per place per day, and something that runs for days counts on the day it started. Brief lane blocks that cleared inside an hour are left out, closures scheduled to run longer than a week are roadworks rather than incidents, an outage counts when it left 10 or more customers without power, and stories about policy or funding are not incidents.

Areas, most affected first

Tap a row to see it on the map.Areas are measured from Bakersfield City Hall: within 3 miles is Downtown Bakersfield, within 12 miles (about where Highway 99 and the Westside Parkway run) is that side of Bakersfield, and beyond that is the metro. An item with no coordinates is counted in the totals but not placed on the map. Corridors come from the road a source named. Interstates are split into the stretch north, south, east or west of downtown Bakersfield, since one number for a whole interstate hides where the trouble is. Areas are the cities of Kern County in the box: Bakersfield, Delano, Wasco, Shafter, McFarland, Arvin, Taft, Maricopa and Tehachapi, from the Census Bureau's boundary files. Places that are not incorporated have no area drawn: items there are shown on the metro map.
Sources are read every ten minutes, and the counts are rebuilt whenever one of them publishes something new. Last counted Nov 4, 6:43 AM PT.
Only what these sources published. Nothing inferred. Counted once when an agency and a newsroom report the same thing.
