Chicago Tracker
Every road closure, water issue, outage, construction notice and transit alert the city's agencies, utilities and newsrooms reported across Chicago and the close-in metro, counted week by week. No login, no feed. Just the numbers, and where they landed.
What the numbers say
A heavier week on the roads. Water, power, construction and transit were busier than the week before.
Half of Chicago's road incidents clear within 81 minutes. The longest ran 13 hours.
Measured from 237 with a start and end time, the last 6 days.
Half of Chicago's outages clear within 1.9 hours. The longest ran 9.5 hours.
Measured from 31 with a start and end time, the last 6 days.
Half of Chicago's construction notices clear within 1.5 hours. The longest ran 3 days.
Measured from 198 with a start and end time, the last 6 days.
Half of Chicago's transit alerts clear within 30 minutes. The longest ran 24 hours.
Measured from 18 with a start and end time, the last 6 days.
Week by week
Weeks start on Sunday. One thing is counted once per place per day, and something that runs for days counts on the day it started. Brief lane blocks that cleared inside an hour are left out, closures scheduled to run longer than a week are roadworks rather than incidents, an outage counts when it left 10 or more customers without power, and stories about policy or funding are not incidents.
Where Chicago was hit this week
The places that came up most in the last 6 days.
Areas, most affected first
520 placedWhat the map says
Tap a row to see it on the map.Areas are measured from State and Madison, where Chicago's street numbering starts: within 2 miles is Downtown and the Loop. Inside city limits the rest is the North, Northwest, West, Southwest or South Side, by direction from the Loop; outside them it is the matching suburbs, or Northwest Indiana. An item with no coordinates is counted in the totals but not placed on the map. Corridors come from the road a source named, called by the name Chicagoans use (the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Eisenhower, Lake Shore Drive). A bare interstate number is split into the stretch north, south or west of the Loop. Only road incidents and construction are placed on corridors. Wards and community areas are both the City of Chicago's own boundaries, from its Data Portal, and each ward is named here by the community areas it mostly covers. They cover the City of Chicago only, so anything in Evanston, Naperville, Schaumburg, Gary or elsewhere in the metro belongs to neither and is not in this view.
Sources are read every ten minutes, and the counts are rebuilt whenever one of them publishes something new. Last counted Oct 2, 11:57 AM CT.
Only what these sources published. Nothing inferred. Counted once when an agency and a newsroom report the same thing.
