Raleigh-Durham Tracker
Every road closure, water issue, outage, construction notice and transit alert the city's agencies, utilities and newsrooms reported across Raleigh-Durham and the close-in metro, counted week by week. No login, no feed. Just the numbers, and where they landed.
What the numbers say
A heavier week on the roads, with I-40 coming up most. Power and construction were busier than the week before.
Half of Raleigh-Durham's road incidents clear within 88 minutes. The longest ran 32 hours.
Measured from 81 with a start and end time, the last 7 days.
Half of Raleigh-Durham's outages clear within 3.4 hours. The longest ran 15 hours.
Measured from 55 with a start and end time, the last 7 days.
Half of Raleigh-Durham's construction notices clear within 7.3 hours. The longest ran 2 days.
Measured from 37 with a start and end time, the last 7 days.
Road incidents cluster between 4 PM and 5 PM: 12 percent of them start in that one hour.
Measured from 89 road incidents, the last 7 days.
Week by week
Weeks start on Sunday. One thing is counted once per place per day, and something that runs for days counts on the day it started. Brief lane blocks that cleared inside an hour are left out, closures scheduled to run longer than a week are roadworks rather than incidents, an outage counts when it left 10 or more customers without power, and stories about policy or funding are not incidents.
Where Raleigh-Durham was hit this week
57 percent of road incidents in the last 7 days happened on four roads.
Areas, most affected first
206 placedWhat the map says
Tap a row to see it on the map.Areas are measured from the Capitol in downtown Raleigh: within 2 miles is Downtown Raleigh, within 6 miles (about where the Beltline runs) is that quadrant of Raleigh, and beyond that is the metro. Durham is its own centre: anything within 7 miles of downtown Durham is placed as Durham. An item with no coordinates is counted in the totals but not placed on the map. Corridors come from the road a source named. Interstates are split into the stretch north, south, east or west of downtown Raleigh, or of downtown Durham for the Durham side, since one number for a whole interstate hides where the trouble is. Council districts are the City of Raleigh's own boundaries, from its GIS: the five district seats, A to E. Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and the rest of the Triangle have no district drawn yet and are shown on the metro map.
Sources are read every ten minutes, and the counts are rebuilt whenever one of them publishes something new. Last counted Oct 9, 9:08 PM ET.
Only what these sources published. Nothing inferred. Counted once when an agency and a newsroom report the same thing.
